New South Welshman Hayden Mellross has been signed for the 2016 AMA West Coast Supercross Championship. Mellross spent the last part of his junior racing career residing at the Millsaps Training Facility in the United States, competing and qualifying for Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Motocross Nationals. At a time where the United States dollar wasn’t that great, many riders including Hayden did not receive support turning pro, which in previous years riders had. Hayden returned to compete in the Supercross Championships in Australia, then completed in the MX Nationals, however his heart was in American competition.
In 2015, he and his family made the choice to compete in the United States for a year and see what happens. Injury, and re-injury forced the teenager to miss the 2015 Supercross Series, when recovered, Hayden immediately started preparing for the 2015 AMA Outdoor Season. At the end of the season, 2015 was going to be the same thing as previous years, return home (to Australia), compete in the Supercross and go from there. However after a successful rookie year in the AMA Motocross action packed Lites Class, Mellross would be swiftly returning to the United States, to train for the upcoming AMA season, after attending his brothers wedding.
“Most of you guys have heard the rumours and see things on social media, but today, I am excited to announce that I have Officially signed with the 51Fifty Energy Drink Yamaha Team, to contest the West Coast Supercross season!!!” announced Hayden Mellross on social media this morning, with a link to 51Fifty Yamaha’s press release.
“Livingston, CA. (October 29, 2015) – 51FIFTY Energy Drink is proud to announce the signing of Hayden Mellross to the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha team for the 2016 Supercross season. The team will compete in the AMA West 250 Series and, with continued support from Yamaha Racing, be aboard the championship-winning YZ250F.
Hayden, an Australian native, was injured prior to the ’15 East Coast SX series rehabbing into shape before the Outdoors. Mellross completed his first season of the Nationals last year and drew the attention of the industry with strong finishes as a true privateer against a field stacked with Factory riders.
“His natural skill, blazing corner speed and work ethic are a strong foundation for success in 2016,” explains Craig Monty – Team Manager. “I watched his races in ’15, how he handles himself as a professional and am confident he has the skill sets to be an elite rider.” For the past year Mellross developed a strong relationship with his full-time trainer/riding coach Tim Ferry and will continue training along with other top 250/450 Factory riders under the wing of Red Dog, the former Yamaha Factory racer.
“I’m really excited to get this year underway” says Mellross. “I’ve seen the team build a solid foundation since they started only a few years ago; we’ve had productive testing days, the YZ is really fast, I’ve felt strong. I was fortunate to be part of great teams in Australia but now for the first time stateside, I’m able to simply focus on training, practicing, testing and racing. I’m confident with the team and Yamaha support I can be inside the Top 10, and once I get a taste of racing up front, be inside the Top 5.”
