AUSTRALIA. Victorian Motocross Championship MX2 series leader Morgan Fogarty has been given a wildcard to race the MXGP of Asia at Semarang Indonesia 8th July 2018. Fogarty will be joined by fellow Aussie Jye Roberts in the MX2 class who has also been given a wildcard entry.

Realistically what does this mean for the talented too? If these two riders make it through the round unscathed and score MX2 world series points, it would be like a manikin in a shop window painted with stand out colours with a sign saying ‘on sale.’ Australian Athletes are starting to shine on the MXGP circuit which resembles the period of New Zealand’s stranglehold on the 500s back in the day with the Shanye King was the 1996 500cc World Champion and later Ben Townley 2004 MX2 World Champion.

Australia, on the other hand, the Junior World Motocross trophies are piling up however that elusive senior world championship has been out of reach for the likes of Chad Reed, Brett Metcalfe and the late Andrew MacFarlane. In 2018, Queenslander Hunter Lawrence looked strong placing second in the opening race in Argentina, and finishing third for the round, then Lawrence was struck with injury and his MX2 World Championships aspirations deflated. Tasmanian Jed Beaton carried the Aussie batten in Larence’s absence and was sitting in fifth overall before pressing the eject button on the Kawi at MXGP of Great Britain at Matterley Basin back in early June.

The Aussies are liked on the MXGP circuit with the ability to adapt to a track quickly and the ability to podium is quite high, or demonstrate podium speed piloting an underpowered machine. It will be interesting to see how Fogarty and Roberts adapt as they’ll have plenty of track time (MXGP is 2-day race format) to learn lines and rub shoulders with the worlds best.
