Greg Gunn has a problem. Not just the fact that he almost got a hernia hefting his minibikes up into his loft; but the fact that as well as comprehensive collection of full size European and Japanese classic off-road bikes downstairs, he just loves the little buggers upstairs. Does he ride them? No, they just prop themselves up glistening in the glow, basking in his adoration.
Greg is a grown man with a very successful business, yet for all his hard-headed acumen he goes weak at the knees around these little tackers. But why? Well, whilst the collected motorcycles downstairs are built for the serious rider with race winning intent, the pint-sized put-puts up there represent fun. That’s it, they’re just plain fun.
Well, they were when Greg was riding them. You can rest assured he was hooked for life once he got on board as a little tacker and the right wrist fed impulses through his whole body when he cracked that throttle. Seeing a 16 y/o neighbours turquoise blue SL70 got the pulse racing and in negotiation with his folks, that they’d put in dollar for dollar if he got a job; spurred him on (to his parent’s surprise) and a 1976 XR75 Honda was his. Greg was too young for the Reg Hunt Mini MX events at Wallan, but he wore out the Nunawading Trailwheels park tracks.
Now let’s be serious. Small bikes are big fun. We grinned like fools under our helmets riding the things in those early days. We still grin like fools at the sight and sound of our first bike. Recapturing that young fun is where the ‘Holden On Tight’ Minibike Show ‘n’ Shine, Reunion Dinner and MX ride come into the Shannons Insurance Broadford Bike Bonanza at Easter.
Greg is not alone. There will be hundreds of minibikes exhibited in ten different categories from best stock bike, best resto to best modified etc. The Show ‘n; Shine will take over the whole of the MX sheds at the State Motorcycle Park motocross track. Now for the serious part. Riders keen to recapture the bygone buzz will be allowed exclusive access to the track from lunchtime Friday to 4pm. The next day will have the regular classes of pre-1990 motocross bikes including the minis circulating.
Motorcycling Australia and Rosco Holden; Organiser, are hoping that those hidden worn out, perfect or just loved minibikes will see the light of day and are brought out for some exercise. The SIBBB is primarily just a fun run-what-you-bring event so dragging your pride and joy along will surprise you with the amount of respect you get from like-minded individuals.
