AUSTRALIA, VICTORIA, HORSHAM. Horsham Motorcycle Club played host to the opening round of the 2018 Victorian Motocross Championships on the weekend (21/22 April 2018). In warm conditions, the Horsham Circuit was in pristine condition for racing.

Sunday’s racing classes comprise of Vets (30, 40 and 50 years) and MX2 Classes. In the A Grade, Morgan Fogarty came out charging hard on his Davey Motorsports KTM for the first of three of 20-minute motos. Honda’s Callum Norton charged at Fogarty and the two tussled in the opening laps before Fogarty gained the lead setting the fastest lap of the race (1:48.571) producing large gap, while Norton existed the moto with a DNF (did not finish). Honda’s Lachlan Davis held off the charging Empire Yamaha’s Cody Dyce for second place. Ryan Kenney finished fourth, Sam Pelz fifth while WBR Yamaha’s Kale Makeham regrouped from a first corner crash, meandering his way through the pack to sixth place.

In the second moto, the same suspects battled for moto supremacy, Fogarty was flawless out the front of the pack with all the action happening behind him, setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 5 (1:49.377). Kale Makeham had a better start finishing in third place. Lachlan Davis finished fourth and Cody Dyce in fifth while Callum Norton charged down Fogarty, the two started to lap riders in the final stages of the moto. With line choice being critical, Norton selected the winning line in the final lengths of the Horsham circuit for the second moto victory, just .505 seconds ahead of Morgan Fogarty.

Kale Makeham led the opening laps of the third moto, the race pace was fast for the end of the day with riders hovering around the 1:51 mark. Morgan Fogarty came charging through the lead group setting the fastest 1:50.168 on the third lap and taking the lead on the fourth lap. Norton passed Makeham for the second position as both riders set their fastest lap times on the tenth lap. Makeham finishing third and Norton in second. Cody Dyce finished in fourth place and Lachlan Davis in fifth place.

Overall for the round, Morgan Fogarty won the opening round on 102 points, while the rest of the top four is separated by a point, Lachlan Davis’ 86 points secured second place by 1 point from Kale Makeham (85 points) and Cody Dyce on 84 points. While defending champion Callum Norton sits in ninth place after a tragic opening moto DNF 35 points away from the lead.
