Rain, hail, snow and shine was the weather for Saturday’s day 1 of the World Motocross Championships 29 February 2020. In a revised schedule for round 1 Materly Basin (MXGP of Great Britain) due to the weather, it was the Women’s and the EMX125 only who raced on Saturday. Western Australian Tahlia Jade O’Hare led the charge for the Australian Women in race one finishing in 15th, after a 10th Free Practice lap time (3:51.516), 12 time practice lap time (3:33.148). O’Hare started the race in horrendous conditions sitting in 20th place, working her way to 14th for two laps with a best lap time of 3:52.851.
Victorian Maddison Brown finished 26th in moto 1. Free Practice time best lap unscored. Time Practice best lap was 3:41.448 for a 26th. Starting in 27th position, Maddy was in 25th for a lap before finishing 26th, best lap 4:07.733.
In her debut WMX, Hannah Bagnall set a Free Practice time of 4: 39,383, a time practice of 4: 04,267 for 40th and a best lap of 4: 37,899 for 35th. With an opening lap in 37th place, Hannah worked her way to 33rd for a lap, then fell back to 36th mid-race for a 35th place finish.
New Zealand’s Courtney Duncan won Race 1 building valuable points to her championship defence with a best lap of 3:31.591. Italy’s Kiara Fontanesi (3:34.320) was second, followed by the Netherlands Lynn Valk (3:35.509).
