In an interesting move after a decade in South America, the Dakar Rally heads to the Middle East for 2020. Most events since the inception in 1978 were from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, the race relocated in 2009 have been held in South America. After 30 years of discovering the beauty of Africa and a decade of adventure exploring the spectacular landscape of South America, a new chapter in the history of Dakar will be written as the world’s biggest rally makes its Middle East debut in Saudi Arabia.
It will be interesting to see the future routes of the Dakar Rally, with the move to Saudi Arabia is there a future where the Dakar Rally could return to a finish in Dakar? Or will the race relocate to the entity that has the biggest purse? Will an FIM Rally round be held in South America for 2020? I dare say South America will be sad to see the Dakar go. The future of the Dakar will be an interesting journey for competitors, support crews and fans.
