EUROPE, GREECE. The Hellas Rally (20-27 May 2018) attracted Aussie Rider Andrew Houlihan to compete in the 2018 event, and to be honest KAJX doesn’t know much about the event and has been following Andrew’s progress, and it was awesome to see Andrew stop and assist another competitor, then KAJX see’s today’s post…

“Not the way we wanted to finish up the Hellas Rally.” said Katie Houlihan. “Andrew left at 10.27am this morning for the final stage of the rally. After riding the liaison to the last special stage he left and only got 1km in when he took a wrong turn and had to turn around. While making his way back he collided with another bike coming the other way.

He and the other rider were ambulanced out of the crash scene. He was taken to the local hospital in Pyros where they did x rays and inserted a drainage tube into his right lung due to a thorax being present. So far he appears to have multiple broken ribs and multiple fractures in his shoulder blade. We were the put into another ambulance for a 1.5hr road trip to Patras to get CT scans of his chest, I am actually sitting here posting as this is being done. Once we are finished with the scan we will be put into another ambulance to go to another hospital for Neurological tests and a thorax specialist we check him out.

The hospitals are not what we have in Aus and the language barrier is proving difficult but thanks to Suzanna who owns the motel are a staying at I have made many calls asking her to translate for me, she even came to the first hospital to make sure I was ok and that the ambulance took me with them, which they weren’t happy about.

To Pablo, I can’t thank you enough for staying with Andrew the whole time and losing precious minutes of time and to Hernan and Domingo for getting me where I needed to be.

I think it is going to be a long night here so I will keep you updated as we go.” concluded Katie.

We are so lucky in Australia with our medical care, and there is always someone that speaks English to converse with. KAJX would like to wish Katie and Andrew all the best, hope the travel home isn’t too painful, and thank them both for sharing their holiday photos has been a blast following the event.
