Discipline Affected: Motocross Nationals – Australian Motocross Championship

Information Regarding:
Clarification of the 2018 Manual of Motorcycle Sport, GCR, and the amendment to the results of Round 3 and Round 4 of the 2018 MX Nationals Australian Motocross Championship, held in Wonthaggi, Victoria on May 19 and 20 respectively.
These amendments affect:

  • Round 3, MX 1, Race One.
  • Round 4, MX 2, Race One.

Change of Results:
The rationale for this determination and subsequent amendment to results;
It is now clear that the process of Clerk of Course determination and subsequent Steward protest hearings have demonstrated that there are differing opinions on the interpretation of this rule. It is therefore imperative that Motorcycling Australia provides concise direction on the actions necessary, to provide a fair and just outcome for all competitors, teams, promoters and sponsors.
After conducting an investigation which involved consultation with active Key Officials in the Motocross discipline, the Motorcycling Australia Motocross Commission, relevant stakeholders and the ability to review video footage of the incidents; Motorcycling Australia has made the following determinations:

  1. Clarify the 2018 Manual of Motorcycle Sport, GCR, in order to prevent misinterpretation.

Current rule:
11.16.6 Finish Line The finish line must be:
a) Marked with a flexible post at each side of the track, and
b) Clearly visible to the judge.

The intent of the rule is to define the finish line. This clarification is to ensure that riders are aware that to be considered a finisher, a competitor must pass “between” the flexible posts situated on each side of the track that define the finish line. (The finish line only exists and is contained, between the marking posts)
Regardless of extenuating circumstances, riders attempting to cross the finish line “outside” of the flexible posts will be deemed as non-finishers. This ruling applies to any competitor seeking classification in an event, whether riding or pushing their machine.

  1. To overturn the decisions made by the Steward of the event with regard to the rule clarification and amend the results retrospectively to correctly reflect the intent and clarification of the aforementioned rule to:
    1. Nullify the classification of Brett Metcalfe in Race One of the MX1 event held at the MX Nationals Round 3 that took place at Wonthaggi on the 19th of May 2018. [KAJX: Metty gets no points for race one, the epic moment of trying to push his machine over the finish line and couldn’t make it up the jump face]
    2. Nullify the classification of Jayden Rykers in Race One of the MX2 event held at the MX Nationals Round 4 that took place at Wonthaggi on the 20th of May 2018. [KAJX: Rykers gets no points for his efforts.]

This determination and subsequent changes to the provisional results pertains to riders being classified who did not cross the finish line in accordance with GCR

In accordance with the regulations outlined in the Motorcycling Australia Manual of Motorcycle Sport, certain parties may have the right to appeal this determination. Should you wish to exercise this right, you should consult chapter 7 of the Manual for the correct procedure to be followed.
